Young and Norman in Birmingham
Young and Norman standing before the replica of the Parthenon in the
main square in Birmingham, where the former now lives. This replica was
once used as a concert hall for the
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, but the UK govt rewarded the
fame of its then conductor Simon Rattle by building a magnificent
Concert Hall for the CBSO. It is one of the best halls in the world,
with changeble acoustics! Now, about Partheon replicas. There seems to
be a compulsion all over Europe to build them, such was the inferiority
complex of the civilizations whose philosophical foundations are
essentially Greek. I have seen these replicas in Edinburgh and Vienna,
and doubtless there are many more. The other Greek "thing" that marked
successful banks and other imposing buildings in Europe are the Dorian
and Corinthian columns. (Heh, heh, bet you don't know it, but today
there is only ONE building in modern Corinth that has Corinthian
columns!)
