Waleed Kadous' Be Software Projects

What is Be?

Be is a company that make a revolutionary new operating system called the BeOS, which runs on PowerPC hardware. Formerly, Be also made a very cool machine called the BeBox, with dual PPC603e's at 133MHz (or dual 603's @ 66 MHz). Unfortunately, they don't make them any more. You can still run it on PowerPC hardware, though (e.g. Macs, PowerComputing machines, Motorola boxes, etc). Recent news is that a Pentium version of the BeOS will be available soon (i.e. first quarter '98!).

The BeOS is special in that it is a truly modern OS. Some people assert that Be actually stands for "buzzword-enriched" - all the things you'd expect plus more. For me, my favourite feature is that it has both a good GUI and a good command line interface - it's rare to have a computer that has both.

You can find out more about Be at their Web site.

Err ... umm ... I've been busy with other things recently, which means I have not had the opportunity to code much, or to work on my favourite Be projects, even though I love doing so. But hopefully, things will get back to normal, and I'll code some more ...

It turns out things will never return to normal :(. I've now accepted a position as an associate lecturer; which means that I barely have time to work on my PhD, let alone work on the BeBox :(.

BeSalat

BeSalat is an application for calculating prayer times for Muslims. It is configurable to cope with a number of different schools and handles different cities. It is based on original source by Waleed Muhanna. The current project is a quick port, until I can get my act together. Unfortunately, this means shell-only right now.

It consists of:

The current version is 2.1. You can download it for PowerPC or Intel: If you have any comments, suggestions or advice, please e-mail: waleed@cse.unsw.edu.au .
