Easily the best field guide for New Zealand is:

Barrie Heather & Hugh Robertson: Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand
(illustrated by Derek Onley); Viking Press, 1996.

It is readily available in New Zealand, and will certainly be avilable from
Andrew Isles in Mlebourne and, I would imagine, the RAOU shop, also in
Melbourne.
