Hello All
When the cold weather hit a couple of weeks ago bird numbers diminished.
There are few waterfowl around anyway, but now the Helmeted Friarbird and
Yellow Oriole that regularly visited my verandah suddenly disappeared.
Zitting Cisticola around town are also very shy now. However our three
resident Orange-footed Scrubfowl have become very noisy.

Had a few interesting records recently; Partridge Pigeon near the
Territory Wildlife Park a few weeks ago; Eastern Rosella feeding among
Northern Rosellas at Pine Creek; Scarlet Honeyeater in the Stuart Park
mangroves along with a couple of Red-headed Honeyeaters. The usual suite
of birds including Chestnut Rail at Stuart Park (3 visits, 2 sightings, 1
calling). Also Red-chested Button-quail at Holmes Jungle. And lots of
MacLeay's Water Snakes - I've never seen them in such numbers before.

We had to laugh at our resident Brown Goshawk when it decided to take a
swipe at one of our resident Orange-footed Scrubfowl just as it leapt out
ofa large black wattle (Acacia auriculiformis). I don't know why
goshawks tackles such big prey; they've even had a go at me on a couple
of occasions!

Also had some success with the little cards put out by Birds Australia.
While most Territory business-people stare blankly at them and grunt,
Michelle of the Casablanca Motel, Parap, has offered to give birdwatchers
who present this card, a 10% discount.
