For anyone in the Brisbane area who hasn't seen a Sooty Oystercatcher this
might be their best chance.
Hi All,
We see Sooty Oystercatchers here (Sunshine Coast, Qld) all the time,
but they are probably less common than we realise. Up to five used to
be at Dux Creek, Bribie Island, for several years, but they don't
seem to be around these days. The reason I mention them is that they
were never in the habitat which I would describe as typical for
Sooties. The habitat was dredge spoil, no rocks. Bribie, being a sand
island, is a bit short on rocks.
Further up the coast, a family of Sooty Oystercatchers lives on the
rocks at Wickham Point, Caloundra. The number varies, but during
recent months there have been up to 9 individuals. You can often pick
up a Wandering Tattler or two on the same rocks.
Cheers,
Jill
