THREE orange-bellied parrots bred at Adelaide
Zoo will be released in Tasmania this week.
The release is part of an ongoing rescue mission
to save the species by the zoo, Healesville Sanc-
tuary in Victoria and authorities in Tasmania.
The birds, born in December, will be released at
Birches Inlet, south of Strahan. There are thought
to be about 200 of the birds left in the wild, having
fallen prey t o foxes and cats.
The small parrots breed in Tasmania before
migrating across the Bass Strait t o mainland
Australia, from the Coorong in South Australia t o
Victoria's Gippsland.
