Thanks for the deluge of information everyone. I think I'll just head for the Botanical Gardens. I've downloaded maps, and bus timetables too, although it looks like I'll be staying less than a km from them. I'll only have an afternoon and a morning, so there's no time to go anywhere else. As a beginner who either hasn't seen or hasn't noticed many birds yet, it probably doesn't matter where I go.

On a side note, according to Wikipedia our wattles are named so because their timber was used for wattle and daub housing construction in the early days.
