For true portability you could try a the Kowa 501 or 502 (though it is possible 
they are just about to be discontinued - see web page reference below) or the 
Opticron Might Midget MM2. Not sure about the availability of either of these 
in OZ.

They are very small, cheap and look like toys but the optical quality is 
surprisingly good. You can definitely see more than with even expensive bins 
(my husband has a top of the range Leicas) You can get very light weight 
tripods to go with them. We used our Kowa TS 502 in our trip to Oz in 2006.
