In September/October 2008, I met so many wonderful birding friends in Australia, I'm thinking all of you would be interested to know that the 20 Whooping Crane chicks led by ultralight aircraft are about to reach the 10,000th mile (16,000 km) mark in the air along the migration route between Wisconsin and Florida.

This is the 9th year that Project Operation Migration has been leading Whooping Crane chicks back from the brink of extinction.
