This evening I had my third sighting of a Grass Owl in 10 days on
Queensland's Sunshine Coast. I saw a magnificent female Grass Owl just after
sunset not far from my home at Ninderry. This locality is far removed from
the area where I saw a Grass Owl on two occasions earlier this month, but in
similar low-lying sugar cane country.
I recall when Eric Zillman showed me my first Grass Owl, in 1974 near Gin
Gin in southern Queensland, that I was surprised it was in in sugar cane
country. Not anymore.
Other good birds late this afternoon before the owl showed included Brolga,
Buff-banded Rail, Spotted Harrier and Australian Hobby.
