Algorithms Development Internship

Position Description:

NASDAQ OMX sponsors a 14 weeks Summer Internship Program in Australia. This is a paid summer internship program targeted to rising university juniors, seniors and graduate students who have shown a commitment to academic excellence and an interest in the financial services industry.
The 2014 Summer Internship Program will run from 24th of November 2014 to 27th February 2015.

The Summer Internship Program is an important element in NASDAQ OMX's efforts to recruit and develop a premier workforce. Our internships provide selected students with the opportunity to apply traditional academic classroom learning to actual work experience.

The Program is competitive, with a limited number of opportunities available each summer in NASDAQ OMX business units located in Sydney.

Summer Interns will work on assigned tasks or projects in a specific NASDAQ OMX business unit for a period of 14 weeks. Each Summer Intern's assignment and responsibilities will vary. In addition to their specific assignments, Summer Interns will have the opportunity to participate in training, seminars and other events designed to enhance their overall knowledge of the financial services industry. They meet with experts in their field and see their work make a difference.

Part of our team building the Market Surveillance solution for Exchanges and Regulators, you will be working on the following:
* Learn the 4G Language "Alice". NASDAQ OMX uses Alice to write alerts and reports algorithms. Learning Alice will involve an introductory course over one week.
* Review the Alice documentation and reference manual. This work is part of the continuous effort to improve our customer facing documentation
* Debug Alerts and Reports using Alice. As part of the Alert Development team, you will participate in the day to day activities of improving the SMARTS Alerts portfolio.
* Auditing and re-writing some existing internal documents. This could be auditing certain wiki pages or sales documents and making sure the documents get the approval of all stakeholders.

At the end of the internship you can expect the following:
• Acquiring basic understanding of the way transaction data is stored in SMARTS databases.
• Using Alice in solving real world data mining tasks.
• Acquiring a good understanding of trade surveillance technology.

Position Type: Undergraduate Students

Selection Criteria: Requirements:
• Rising uni juniors, seniors or graduate students pursuing degrees in Economics, Finance or Science, and having a strong programming knowledge and interest.
• Distinction Average as a minimum
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Intermediate programming skills. Preferably perl, Visual Basic or java.
• Ability to navigate and run simple commands on UNIX systems.
• Native English speaker
• Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written.
• Well organized with ability to plan and complete multiple projects at once.
• Orientation to detail
• Highly motivated with evidence of intellectual curiosity and creativity
• Ability to respond productively to a heavy workload and tight deadlines
