Description:
People everywhere are generating ever-increasing amounts of data, often without being fully aware of who may be recording the information about them. For example, smartphone applications and user movements generate vast quantities of detailed, personal data about huge segments of the population. Neither the impact nor the potential of this society-wide data gathering are well understood. Once data is gathered, it is processed - and society is only now beginning to grapple with the consequences for privacy, both legal and ethical, of these actions. Focusing on the problem of enabling large-scale privacy-preserving processing of personal data (crowd sourcing), this project will mix practical and theoretical work. We will explore how personal data can be processed in online systems while keeping this data under the user's control.
