Users eligible to an account at CSE: UNSW Staff:
CSE Staff
All members of CSE staff are provided with a CSE account. New members of CSE staff have an account created for them as soon as the system staff are notified of their details. In most cases, a duly delegated member of staff (often a senior collegue) will take the new staff member to see the system support staff in room 111, K17, as part of their introduction to the school. Non-CSE Staff:
If you are associated with another school (eg: Elec Eng) and wish to use our computing resources, then you will need to write a letter to our Head of School requesting to use our computing resources, and giving the following details: - The exact hardware and software you need access to;
- The machines or labs you propose using;
- The amount of disk space or other resources required;
- The period for which the account is required;
- A signed statement from the head of your unit or school stating that you require these resources, and that your unit or school does not provide them.
UNSW Students:
Enrolled in a CSE program or CSE course
All CSE program or course students have an account created automatically from official enrolment records obtained from the Universities central student records. Your account will remain active for as long as you are enrolled in at least one CSE program or course. Note:
- New users will need to log into the "sirius" or "newacc" account (which require no passwords) to initialise their password.
- If you believe that you should be a member of a particular course or program class and are not, then you should go to help desk to have them rectify this.
CSE Thesis Students
All thesis students get accounts based on their official enrolment records. However, to gain access to extra resources associated with being a thesis student, thesis students (both undergraduate and postgraduate students), will need to fill out a Thesis Application Form (available from the CSE Help Desk) to gain access to extra resources associated with being a thesis student. Non-CSE Students:
Those students associated with a member of CSE staff
If the CSE staff member is associated in some significant way with a thesis or project that the non-CSE student is involved in (for example the CSE staff member might be the student's co-supervisor), then the CSE staff member may make a request to the system support staff on your behalf for you to have access to CSE computing resources. Such a request is usually emailed to ss, and includes all relevant details of the association. Those students not associated with a member of CSE staff
If you are a student from another school (eg: Elec Eng) and wish to use our computing resources, then a senior academic from your school (usually your supervisor) will need to write a letter on your behalf to our Head of School requesting that you be allowed to use our computing resources. The following details will need to be included: - The exact hardware and software you need access to;
- The machines or labs you propose using;
- The amount of disk space or other resources required;
- The duration the account is required;
- A statement to the effect that your unit or school cannot provide these computing resources.
- A signature from the head of your unit or school.
Non UNSW Staff or Students:
Visitors or Associates
If you are an associate of CSE (eg: Visiting fellow, guest of an academic, or other special case), a duly delegated member of staff (usually the associated CSE academic staff member or the head of school) will need to inform the system staff of your details. Others
If you do not have either: - A current, official academic association with the school of CSE (ie: you have graduated or have deferred your studies);
- An association with CSE that has been formally approved by the head of school or delegated staff member;
then you are extremely unlikely to be eligible to an account. We suggest that you investigate using a commercial ISP (Internet Service Provider), some of which have extremely reasonable rates (eg approx $30 a month, for 40 hours access).
Note: The school of CSE provides graduates with a means of redirecting their email and/or web pages to another address. (See the Alumni redirection page for more details)
FAQ (should be frequently used excuses)
- "I'm enrolled in COMP_WXYZ in the coming session, please keep my account"
Your account will remain active as long as you are enrolled in one CSE course or program. ie: Expiry dates associated with program or course class memberships are such that your account will not expire if you are enrolled in a CSE program or course in successive sessions.
- "I need my account to receive my mail, please keep my account"
SImply needing access to email is not a sufficiently valid reason to keep your account active. You can get email equally well via an Internet Service Provider. We can arrange for mail sent to CSE to be forwarded to your new address.
- "I have not finished my thesis yet, can you extend my account"
Yes, you will need to have your thesis supervisor make this request on your behalf.
- "My account is expiring this session, will I be able to keep my files if I get an account again next session"
Yes, files in expired accounts are never deleted, they are all archived. It's a simple and easy procedure (using revive or tkrevive) to restore files the next time you have an account with us.
