Postgraduate Coursework Students
Commencing Students
Congratulations on gaining a place at the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). We welcome you to your new program and hope you find your time at CSE challenging and rewarding and we look forward to helping you achieve your goals.
The deadline for international students to accept their offer is Sunday 28th of July (midnight) while domestic students have until Sunday 4th of August (midnight) to accept their offer.
Enrolment appointments for Semester Two 2013 open on the 26th of April and will close Sunday 4th of August with classes commencing Monday 29th of July. We encourage all students to accept their offer and enrol early to ensure a preferred timetable and be available to commence classses on Monday 29th of July.

myUNSW Accept and Enrol Online
You will need to formally accept your offer online before you can enrol. Full details on how to accept, decline or defer your offer and enrol can be found here in myUNSW.
As part of your study with CSE you will be given a CSE account and email address, in addition to your university email account, and this will be used for assignment submission and for other important information related to your study with the school. It is important that this cse account be set up before semester starts and you can activate your account by accepting the conditions on the Yellow Form. We encourage students to visit one of our labs and go through the lab orientation (Lab Zero) prior to their first lab class.
Course Selection (All Students)
Selecting your courses for the coming semester can be challenging, a good starting point is to consult the program structure and course list on the CSE postgraduate programs website which is linked from the table below.
Students are advised to take extra care in selecting courses for 2013 as semester offerings for some courses have changed from previous years.
The following list of courses are recommended in your first semester.

All students are exempt from the professional development courses as admission is only granted to students with a degree in the discipline of computing. If you choose to repeat material, you must contact the CSE Student Office to have your advanced standing adjusted. It will not be possible to graduate with credit for more than 24 units of credit in professional development courses. Students should select courses from the list of engineering and technical management, and specialisation courses consistent with their pre-requisite knowledge. There are no program level core courses. |
Once you know the core courses and/or electives you want to enrol in, you can consult the UNSW Timetable to determine availability and class times.
Finally, enrolling in the courses can be done through myUNSW - make sure that you complete your enrolment and do not leave any courses as 'pending'.
Please contact the CSE Student Office if you have any questions on course enrolment as enrolling in the wrong courses may cause you to enrol in (and pay for) an additional semester to complete requirements.
Academic advice can be given by program coordinators, whose details are listed below, however we recommend that you contact the CSE Student Office first as we can assist you with the majority of your enquiries. Enquiries via email will receive a response within 24 hours.
Students with a background in computing may apply to be granted Advanced Standing (transfer credit) or Exemption (course or pre-requisite waiver). A knowledge test will need to be completed in some cases. Full details can be found on the advanced standing website. Advanced Standing applications should be finalised before you commence study at CSE UNSW.

CSE Program Rules
- It is your responsibility to enrol in courses consistent with your program. The School will not guarantee credit for courses that have not been formally approved.
- Students are not normally permitted to enrol in courses with timetable clashes, however some lecturers may approve a clash of no more than one hour.
- A full-time load is four courses per Semester, ie. 24 units of credit (UOC). International students are required to be enrolled in 24UOC and complete the degree in the minimum amount of time. Note that three courses is also regarded as a full-time load (18UOC) for local students.
- Postgraduate students planning on enrolling in 4 courses in any semester should expect to attend at least one day or late afternoon class. Also, students enrolling in a full-time load should consider limiting outside work commitments to less than 10 hours per week.
- Students are expected to give priority to their University study commitments and any absence must clearly be for circumstances beyond your control. Work commitments are not normally considered a justification for being granted Special Consideration or withdrawal without failure after the deadline.
