Dr Bernard Backham has won the ACM SIGBED’s Paul Caspi Memorial Dissertation Award for his PhD thesis towards verified microkernels for real-time mixed-criticality systems. Bernard’s thesis was selected from a total of 11 nominations. The selection committee found the winning thesis to be an outstanding contribution at the intersection of operating systems, worst-case execution time analysis, and model checking.

Bernard had earlier received the John Makepeace Bennett Award for Australasian Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation awarded by CORE, the Computing Research and Education Association of Austalasia. This recognises the best PhD thesis in computer science across Australia and New Zealand.
