Student Seminar Series

Frances Shaw, The Politics of Blogs: Australian feminism online

As part of my study of the women’s movement online and feminist blog networks in Australia, this presentation provides a review of the concepts of submerged networks, abeyance structures, and the related idea of counterpublics for the study of blog networks generally and feminist blog networks in particular.

Jian Xu, The Politics of Alternative Journalistic Practices in Cyberspace in China

In my research, I want to systematically discuss the origin, development and future of alternative journalistic practice in cyberspace in China.  I will focus on some representative ‘new media events’ and ‘popular cybercultural phenomena’ as case studies of how the new digital technology, especially the internet, helps marginalized groups, subculture groups and dissidents have a voice in China.
