GUIDANCE ON COURSE SELECTION

To assist students in selecting their courses CSE has compiled some general notes. Students should be aware that there is often very little choice in courses during their first semester hence are advised to stick to the standard program. If you have any queries email postgrad@cse in the first instance and we will respond promptly (usually within 24 hours).

All program structure information is available at: http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/postgrad/programs

General notes for all programs:

  • Courses defined as a Co-requisite for the course you want to enrol in MUST be undertaken at the same time as the primary course.
  • Courses defined as a Pre-requisite for the course you want to enrol in MUST be successfully completed prior to the primary course.
  • For information on co/pre-requisites for all courses, please refer to the Online Handbook of the relevant course.
  • Timetable information can be found by clicking on 'See Timetable' in the online handbook descripition of a course, or by checking the selection of courses offered by the School of CSE via the Postgraduate Timetable.
  • 4 courses (24UOC) is considered a full-time load. 2 Courses (12UOC) is considered a part-time load.
  • Please refer to the section on Program Rules for further information on rules governing enrolment in a CSE program.
  • It is the students responsibility to ensure that they enrol in courses that are consistent with the program structure. Courses outside of the program structure need prior approval by the CSE Student Office. Students who fail to correctly enrol may be required to extend their enrolment (incurring additional course fees) while they complete the specified program.

LATE ENROLMENT

The University expects that students will be able to enrol online during the online enrolment period. Interstate and international students are advised to arrive in Sydney at least 3 weeks prior to the start of semester to give themselves time to find accommodation, to finalise enrolment, and to participate in orientation programs. Late enrolments severely inconvenience Schools and other students.

New students who cannot enrol online by the end of this period MUST notify the Student Office in writing as soon as possible - email postgrad@cse.

Students may forfeit their place in the program if the School does not receive this notification.

If permission is granted for a late enrolment, students may be liable for a late enrolment fee of A$250 per course. Students who receive a late offer of admission to a program, or students with documented circumstances which would reasonably prevent them from attending to enrol in accordance with the schedule, will be exempted from the penalties of late enrolment.

Note: The School of Computer Science and Engineering DOES NOT recommend missing more than 2 weeks of classes. Students will be asked to sign a declaration stating that they will take full responsibility for the consequences associated with late enrolment and will not be granted any special consideration for assessment or withdrawal on the basis of a late enrolment.

ACCESSING YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNTS AFTER SUCCESSFUL ENROLMENT

It is very important that you access your accounts upon successful enrolment as UNSW uses email as a way of communicating important official notices to students.

Two accounts are provided:

  1. Unimail is the UNSW Central Electronic Mail System, provided by the UNSW Communications Unit and supported by Dis><Connect. Uni-wide related notices such as messages from the Chancellor, notices of student fees, end of Semester exam results are sent via this account.
  2. The CSE computer account is the CSE School’s electronic mail system. Official School announcments will be sent to this address.

It is highly recommended that students monitor both email accounts, or forward one to the other.

To activate your CSE computer account, you will need to first read and then acknowledge the important information outlined in the Yellow Form.
