You may have seen advertising mentioning UNSW COMPUTING. This is the name we use externally, but now you are a student at UNSW you will hear it called " CSE" - short for the School of Computer Science and Engineering.
CSE has an extensive O-Week program aimed both at giving you some fun activities to do and also to help get you ready for lectures the following week. This year's program is at O-Week08
Many of these activities are for students who join our Mentoring Program. If you join this program you will be allocated a senior student who will help you with your transition to life at UNSW and CSE. This is a very popular program and has helped many student to perform better. It also lets you join free BBQ's and Pizza nights! This program is open to students in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics (and their double degrees) or the Flexible First Year. January 2008.
Step One: Understanding your program requirements
All students should consult the UNSW online handbook to review the courses which make up their degree (links provided below). In some cases, specific program advice has been provided by the CSE Student Office or your Program Director.
Students enrolled in combined or concurrent degrees should consult the program authorities responsible for providing specific program advice. CSE advises on the BE program only, but will happily point you in the right direction if you're not sure who you should speak to for advice on the Arts, Science, Commerce, or COFA program requirements.
Step Two: Select your courses and review the timetable
Once you have selected the courses you are required to enrol in for your first semester, the next step is to arrange a timetable. Note that most undergraduate classes require you to enrol in a lab and/or tutorial as well as a lecture.
All UNSW Class Timetables are available online:
http://www.timetable.unsw.edu.au
Courses are grouped by campus, which is Kensington for all students (except those enrolled in the BSc BDM - who select courses from the College of Fine Arts Paddington campus).
For convenience sake, courses managed by the School of CSE are outlined on the CSE timetable:
http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/courses
These courses include those that start with the prefix BINF, COMP, SENG.
UNSW expects students to enrol in courses consistent with their program, so any courses you select from outside of your program requirements may be ignored and you will be required to enrol in (and pay for) more courses and this could extend the duration of your degree by 1 semester or more. It's always best to check if you are not sure.

Step Three: Login and enrol via myUNSW
UNSW manages all enrolments via the Online Enrolment Portal known as myUNSW. The first time you login to this site you will need to do so by clicking on the Accept Online link. This will take you through the steps required to accept your offer and enrol in the courses you have selected. You will be asked to review your personal details during each enrolment cycle.
To login you will need your Student Number (provided on your offer letter) and your Unipass (which you can create here)
Click on the images below to access these Portal:
Courses are selected by searching the course catalogue while you are logged in to myUNSW.
The Portal will be available for online enrolments:
Semester 1: Monday 10 December - Friday 7 March
Semester 2: Enrolments TBA
UNSW has recently moved to semester-based enrolments, so students will not be asked to enrol for Semester 2 2008 courses until May. However all courses that are planned to be offered for Semester 2 have been indicated as such for planning purposes and can be viewed via the UNSW Timetable Website.
TIPS: The first year timetable for most programs contains a large number of lab and tutorial options. For the purpose of getting yourself enrolled, we suggest you use the AUTO TIMETABLE option and then spend some time prior to the start of semester making minor changes to classes as you see fit.
For all online enrolment enquiries or assistance with enrolling during the enrolment period, contact the UNSW Student Services Enrolment Support Centre:
The centre is operational from Wednesday 2 January - Friday 29 February
- by phone +61 2 9385 1110 (9.30 - 17.00 AEST Mon-Fri); or
- via email enrol@unsw.edu.au; or
- in person - location to be advised.
Prior to (and after) this time enrolment support is provided via UNSW Student Central (Map ref C22).

Step Four: Accessing your email accounts after successful enrolment
It is very important that you access your email accounts upon successful enrolment as UNSW uses email as a way of communicating important official notices to students.
Two accounts are provided for CSE students:
- Unimail is the UNSW Central Electronic Mail System, provided by the UNSW Communications Unit and supported by Dis><Connect. Uni-wide related notices such as messages from the Chancellor, notices of student fees, end of Semester exam results are sent via this account.
- The CSE computer account is the CSE School’s electronic mail system. Official School announcments will be sent to this address.
It is highly recommended that students monitor both email accounts, or forward one to the other.
To activate your CSE computer account, you will need to first read and then acknowledge the important information outlined in the Yellow Form.
