Advanced Standing/Exemption
The MIT program has been designed to include both students with minimal computing experience and those with a strong computing background and for this reason we have developed a system of Advanced Standing/Exemption to allow students with suitable experience to either shorten their program or progress to higher level study more quickly. Students unsure about the difference between Advanced Standing and Exemption should consult the CSE Website with the key difference being that Advanced Standing allows students to shorten their degree program by up to 50% while Exemption allows students to progress to higher level courses by bypassing some level 0 pre-requisites without reducing the length of the program.
Students with a strong background in computing are eligible to apply for Advanced Standing/Exemption on entry to their MIT/GradDip IT program and should complete the CSE Advanced Standing/Exemption application form and return it to the CSE Student Office with a certified academic transcript or, in the case of GSOE9820 - Engineering Project Management, evidence of relevant professional experience. Applications will be assessed and students contacted within 48 hours to advise of a suitable pathway (see below) for establishing their knowledge and experience in the relevant courses.
We encourage students to apply for Advanced Standing/Exemption as soon as they receive an offer to study at CSE as this will allow for better mapping off their program in terms of duration and the chain of pre-requisite courses needed to complete the program and specialisation. It is also important to apply early as applications recieved after the first week of semester has passed will not be considered.
Advanced Standing/Exemption is available for the following pre-requisite courses only:
Path 1: Self Assessment
Students assessed by the School of CSE as having a strong background in computing will normally have a bachelors degree in computing with a breadth and depth of computer science and engineering topics covered over a three or four year degree degree.
These students will be given access to a secure online self-assessment website, where they can test their knowledge through short answer questions and problems. A login and password will be sent to the email address provided on the application within 2 working days of the application being received.
Once satisfied that their knowledge of the topics covered is current and satisfactory, the student should contact the CSE Student Office confirming that they wish to proceed with the application for exemption or advanced standing from some or all of the courses and the application will be processed.
Path 2: Exemption Exam
Students assessed by the School of CSE as having a limited background in computing will normally have a bachelors degree in a discipline other than computing and will have covered a more narrow selection of topics over a three or four year degree than those with a strong background in computing.
These students will be directed to attend an exemption exam to be held during the week prior to the commencement of semester, where they will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge to the satisfaction of the CSE Postgraduate Coordinator.
Once the CSE Postgraduate Coordinator is satisfied with the students demonstration of their knowledge, the application will be automatically processed.
Engineering Project Management - GSOE9820
Students who have completed an equivalent course to GSOE9820 in previous study should complete the application form and attach a certified copy of their academic transcript. Students who have relevant professional experience can also apply to have this experience assessed. Applicants should submit a CV with reference letters from previous employers that outline the project management experience. All reference letters should be printed on company letterhead and include contact details of the employer.
