Postgraduate Advanced Standing, Exemption, Substitution

The School of CSE uses the following definitions for advanced standing, exemption and substitution.

TERMINOLOGY
DEFINITION
ADVANCED STANDING
also called
TRANSFER CREDIT

Advanced standing reduces the overall duration of the degree.

Advanced Standing in a program may be approved when the student shows they have sufficient knowledge of the topic. The student will either be credited with 'unspecified advanced standing' or advised that they do not have to complete a course from their program, thus reducing the overall length of the program.

In all cases Advanced Standing can only be given for up to 50% of a program at the School's discretion, and will only be given under two conditions:

1. Internal - Advanced Standing (Transfer Credit)

Applies to some courses in the Master of Information Technology (8543, 5543, 7543) where students sit and pass an internal exemption exam and choose to use these exemptions to reduce the overall duration of their program.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
COMP9020 Foundations of Computer Science
COMP9021 Principles of Programming
COMP9024 Data Structures & Algorithms
COMP9032 Microprocessors & Interfacing
COMP9311 Database Systems
COMP9414 Artificial Intelligence
COMP9331 Computer Networks & Applications
GSOE9820 Engineering Project Management *

* Advanced standing (transfer credit) for GSOE9820 can be granted by the School upon sighting proof of prior studies in this topic. An exemption exam is not required.

It is not possible to apply for advanced standing if a student has previously attempted or remained enrolled beyond the census date in the course for which they are seeking advanced standing.

Students who articulate from a lower level program to a higher level program may elect to graduate from the lower level program.  In all cases, courses completed as part of the lower level program are transferred to the higher level program to reduce the overall duration of the degree.  I.e. students are given internal advanced standing (transfer credit).

Application: Students wishing to apply for one or more Exemption Exams should submit the Postgraduate Exemption Exam Application Form (pdf).

2. External - Advanced Standing (Transfer Credit)

Applies to courses that are not available via an exemption exam where the student has completed a course equivalent to a CSE course in their program at UNSW or another institution and has not used the courses toward another degree. External advanced standing (transfer credit) reduces the overall duration of the program.

Application: Students wishing to apply for external advanced standing (transfer credit) will be required to submit an Exemption/Advanced StandingApplication Form (pdf) and attach certified copies of course descriptions and academic transcript.

EXEMPTION

Exemption does not reduce the overall duration of the degree.

Exemption is used where the student has covered similar material in a course at this or another institution and has received credit for this course towards a degree (or equivalent) and is therefore not eligible for advanced standing; or where a student has passed an exemption exam but does not wish to reduce the overall duration of the program, instead choosing to use their exemptions to waive pre-requisites for higher level courses.

Exemption generally applies to the waiving of compulsory program requirements or pre-requisite courses.

Application: Students wishing to apply for exemption from program requirements or pre-requisite courses will be required to submit an Exemption/Advanced StandingApplication Form (pdf) and attach certified copies of course descriptions and academic transcript.

SUBSTITUTION

Students may apply for substitution if a core or compulsory course is not available during the semester when they need to take it or if there is a timetable clash between two core or compulsory courses. A substitution will be approved if the School agrees that there is no other way for the student to complete degree requirements on time.

Application: Please contact the Student Office for details.
