Postgraduate Program Variation

CSE recognises that a student's circumstance may change during their candidature with the School, and that students don't always make the most appropriate choice of university program when they first arrive. Below is a list of program variation methods possible within the School.

Note however, that it is not possible to transfer from one program area to another, for example, from Master of Information Technology (8543) to Master of Engineering Science (8538/8539). It is expected that these students will apply as new applicants via the UNSW Direct Admissions Office and request advanced standing where appropriate. CSE will endeavor to grant students as much credit as possible without compromising the program.  It is hoped that in the near future UNSW will facilitate internal UNSW transfers.

Outlined below are the CSE definitions of program variations and how they apply to CSE Programs.

TERMINOLOGY DEFINITION
ARTICULATION

Articulated Programs can be defined as a sequence of programs comprising Graduate Certificate and/or Graduate Diploma and/or Masters programs in which the requirements for completion of the earlier program is embedded within the requirements for the subsequent program. This allows students to enrol initially in an early stage of the sequence and subsequently 'add on' further courses to complete a higher level program without loss of credit.

For example, at CSE a student who has completed the Graduate Diploma (GradDip) may articulate to the corresponding Masters program under the following conditions:

  • there are no course failures in the GradDip;
  • they do so within 5 years of completing GradDip requirements
    (longer under special circumstances)

After enrolling in the Masters program by this process, it is only necessary to complete the remaining courses in such a way that the Masters requirements are met.

UPGRADE / RE-ADMISSION

A student who meets the admission requirements for the GradDip/Masters program can apply to upgrade from the GradCert/GradDip prior to completion of program requirements with full credit for appropriate courses already completed.

A student who does not meet the admission requirements for the higher level program should complete the lower level program first and then apply to articulate.

Where a student has already graduated from the lower level program, they must re-apply for admission to the higher level program with a request for advanced standing.  Applications for re-admission are processed via UNSW Direct Admissions and advanced standing is advised with the letter of offer.

It is hoped that in the near future UNSW will facilitate internal UNSW transfers for upgrade requests.

PLAN TRANSFER

Students can also transfer between the different majors of a particular degree, for example, from MIT Database Systems to MIT Internetworking. Students should ensure that they have enough room to complete all the required courses of the new major to avoid completing extra courses and extending the duration of their degree.

It is also possible for students to add a second major if they are in the MIT program.

DOWNGRADE A student who would like to downgrade from the GradDip/Masters program to GradCert/GradDip may do so at any stage, however they may not receive full credit for courses they have completed if they are not appropriate in the new program. Students will still need to complete the degree requirements as outlined for the new degree.

Candidates seeking to articulate, upgrade or downgrade should complete the Postgraudate Articulation Request (pdf) form and submit it to the CSE Student Office for approval and further processing.

Candidates seeking to transfer their plan within an existing program can do so by sending an email to postgrad AT cse . unsw . edu . au

The Student Office is unable to make recommendations on program or plan variation requests after the semesters census date (31 March/31 August) and in some cases after Week 1 of Semester, but instead will look at all cases at the time of finalising semester examination marks and before the start of each semester. Requests made during the semester will be held and considered at the appropriate time.
