Commonwealth Supported Student Places (Formerly HECS) for Local Postgraduate Coursework
Students
A Commonwealth Supported Student Place is a higher education place for which the Commonwealth
makes a contribution towards the cost of your education. Students enrolling in the following
programs will do so as Commonwealth supported students and thereby incur a Student Contribution
liability.
This liability is approx one third of the usual tuition fee rate, for example, in 2007 the
CSS fee will be $7,118 pa whereas the local postgraduate tuition fee will be $16,656
pa.
Students who are Australian citizens or holders of an Australian Humanitarian Visa can either
defer their Student Contribution through the taxation system by obtaining a HECS-HELP Loan, or pay
their Student Contribution up-front to the University, attracting 20% discount. Australian
Permanent Residents and NZ citizens must pay 100% of their Student Contribution up-front.
If you are determined to be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Student Place, you must submit
a completed Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form by the relevant census date
(Session 1 - 31 March & Session 2 - 31 August). Applications cannot be accepted after the
Census date.
The following CSE programs have Commonwealth Supported Student Places:
7342 - GradCert Computing
5432 - GradDip Computing and Information Technology
8682 - Masters of Computing and Information Technology
