I'm just a few days short of 60 days of IT, is that sufficient?
Unfortunately 60 days of IT is the minimum requirement, which means accumulating anything less than 60 days will not be acceptable.
What do you consider a working day?
A normal working day (in Australia) is considered to be around 8 hours per day regardless of the start and finishing time. Depending on the organization, this may or may not include the appropriate lunch breaks etc.
Can IT be done on a part time basis?
Part time work is permissible so long as the work is done as full working days and no less than 2 full working days per week. As such, part time work that's 3 hour Monday, 2 hours Wednesday, for example will not be acceptable. Likewise, working 1 day per week will also not acceptable.
Do public holidays and weekends count as IT days?
No, weekends do not count towards your IT unless so employed and directed to work on weekends. Public Holidays on the other hand does count.
I would like to do my IT overseas, what do I need to do?
You'll need to seek prior approval from the Co-Coordinator. What's required to get such an approval may be found here.
I'm having difficulties getting IT, what can I do?
There is no easy answer to finding IT. You have to persist and not give up too easily. Have a look at the Getting Help link for further ideas.
The employer wants some sort of insurance letter, what is it and can I get one?
In short there is no need for us to provide you with an insurance letter. You've been asked to provide a letter in order to indemnify the employer from any liability should anything bad happen. They have probably asked for the letter because you're working for them without pay. As we have already explained, unpaid work will not count towards your 60 days of IT. In principle you should not be working without pay as everyone should be entitled to a fair days pay for a fair days work. By being paid, you would be recognized as an employee of the company and would therefore be covered under the company's own insurance policy and no letter would be required from us.
I've come to the end of my 4th year and I haven't done my IT. What options do I have?
As you probably already know you cannot, without exceptions, graduate if you have IT outstanding. As per earlier advise, IT should be complete by the time you enter your 4th year of study in order to avoid this situation. In your current situation, your options are:
Find a paid IT position with a suitable employer as per the guidelines; OR
Find a permanent position (the same guidelines apply for finding acceptable IT); and by arrangement with the employer, use your initial period in the job for your IT.
Once you've accumulated 60 working days, write your IT report, submit it and in due course it will be processed and you'll then be eligible to graduate at the next ceremony. For those looking for a permanent position, you may be able to get a "letter of completion" which simply states that you've completed your coursework bar your IT (you'll need to see the CSE Student office for more information).
When is the latest I can hand my IT report in and still graduate with my friends?
The graduation list cutoff date varies from year to year as determined by the Graduations unit. You should consult the following URL to see when the cut off dates are for ceremonies in each session. In general, students who miss that cut off date, may not be able to graduate until the next available ceremony (ie the following session). While every effort will be made to accommodate a handful of students who submit their IT report at the last possible moment, the resources aren't always available to ensure that the reports are processed in time. This is especially made more difficult if every student decides to hand their IT report in at the last possible moment. Check the Dates link for the latest on when things are due.
How do I check on the status of the IT report I've just handed in?
You should speak (or email) the School Office as they are responsible for tracking the report once it has been handed in. Although the IT-Coordinator has to assess every IT report, the IT-Coordinator is only ever aware of a small subset of reports that is in the pipe line. Always check with the School office first. Do not telephone or email the IT-Coordinator with this question.
Can I get the IT-Coordinator to mark my report first as I'm due to graduate?
Most reports are marked in a first-come-first serve basis. Naturally if you are a potential graduate, your report will prioritized appropriately by the School office and flagged to the IT-Coordinator as being urgent. Once again, if students persist in delaying their IT until their final year, then getting through all the reports may prove difficult within the tight timeframe set by the Graduations Unit. To prevent delays, do your IT early.
Being a bioinformatics student, do I have to work in the ICT sector or can I pursue my IT in the biomedical field?
You have a choice of undertaking your IT in either the ICT field or in the biomedical field. You must ensure that your choice complies with what's considered to be suitable IT.
As a bioinformatics student, can I work for a hospital without being paid?
Yes, but the number of days you can claim for this will be capped at 30 days maximum (days in excess of 30 will not be considered). You must then find paid IT for the remaining 30 days of IT. You will need to see the IT-Coordinator for a letter of indemnity prior to working for the hospital.
When should I hand in my IT report?
You must hand in your IT report no later than 30 days after your last day of employment to the CSE School Office. Your IT will not count if you hand in your report late. If you have a legitimate reason why you cannot submit your IT report within 30 days, then you must contact the IT coordinator immediately to discuss the matter prior to the due date. Failure to do so will result in your IT being rejected. Please take the dead line seriously.
How many IT reports do I need to write?
You will need to write 1 report per employment period regardless of whether the employment is with the same company. So for example, if you worked for a company during the June winter break for 20 days and another 40 days during the summer break, then you will need to submit 2 IT reports, one for the June employment period which must be submitted within 30 days from your last day of employment and another IT report for the summer period which must also to be submitted within 30 days from your last day of employment. This applies, regardless of whether both periods of employment is with the same employer or not.
