Undergraduate External Program Transfers
from outside the Faculty of Engineering Schedule of Transfers
Students who are not provided for within the Faculty of Engineering
Schedule of Transfers, will
be required to apply for admission in one of two ways:
- via
UAC for Local students; or
- via
Direct Admissions for international students
from outside UNSW
Students who have studied overseas may find it difficult to gain entry to UNSW because of our
lack of knowledge of, or confidence in the level at which the program was undertaken. Given the
competitive nature of the UNSW computing programs, it may be necessary to obtain a partial
qualification from another Australian university or another program at UNSW before applying again a
year later. Since transfers are always risky, students must be satisfied that the alternative
program is able to provide a reasonable career path in the event that the transfer doesn't
eventuate.
TAFE qualifications are also difficult to assess, because TAFE courses are designed to train
people in specific skills rather than prepare them for study in more fundamental areas. Completed
Associate Diplomas may be counted as equivalent to a fairly good UAI, but the grades awarded must
be predominantly 'A'. This entry method is unlikely to be successful for Computer Engineering,
Software Engineering or Bioinformatics because of the high demand for these programs.
For advice regarding other qualifications such as Undergraduate Preparation Program (UPP),
students should contact UNSW UAC Admissions via
ugadmin@unsw.edu.au
Transfer of Credit
Students who are granted transfers may be entitled to credit for courses studied in a previous
program, whether or not the program was completed. Equivalent courses are transfered without
question; courses that might reasonably be taken as electives in the new program can also be
counted in most cases. There are some limits, however. It is not possible to be given an exemption
in a UNSW course at a higher level than the original course.
The amount of advanced standing may also be limited because of the requirement that a student
complete at least the last full-time year of the new program. This does not apply to internal
transfers where the original program was not completed.
Students are not required to apply to the School directly for advanced standing. Transfer of
credit will be consdiered as part of the internal admission assessment process and will be outlined
on your letter of offer from UNSW.
