Combined Degrees
Besides the concurrent programs in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Engineering, there are many programs that lead to the award of two degrees with only one year's additional full-time study. The following table lists the common choices and how to apply for them. In most cases entry is via the single degree, with the combined course being elected at enrolment or after one or two years.
Students who maintain a creditable performance may qualify for the award of two degrees in 4~5.5 years of combined full-time study in which the requirements of the degrees have been merged. Students wishing to enrol in a combined degree may do so only on the recommendation of both program authorities governing the selected areas of study.
Students who commence a combined program but subsequently do not wish to proceed with both areas of study, or who fail to maintain a creditable performance, revert to the single degree program with appropriate credit for courses completed.
Students may transfer to some combined programs after partially completing the requirements for either degree provided suitable courses have been completed. However, the choice of courses and the time taken to complete the program can be seriously affected by this.

International Student Exchange Program

Level 2, East Wing, Red Centre Engineering Road Ph: 9385 6449 Fax: 9385 5927 Email: intex@unsw.edu.au
UNSW actively encourages students to take part of their degree overseas through reciprocal exchange agreements with over 130 universities in 32 countries. On average about 150-250 students go on exchange per semester and we receive similar numbers of students from our partner universities. Under the program, UNSW students can spend one or two semesters of their degree at a university in Asia, Europe, North America or South America. Studies completed at overseas universities are credited towards the UNSW degree which means that no extra time is needed to complete the degree. Students cannot extend their degree to go on exchange. An increasing number of foreign universities provide a number of courses in English as well as teach in their own language. Undergraduate and postgraduate students with a satisfactory academic record can apply to participate in the exchange program. During their period of exchange, students remain enrolled at UNSW and pay normal tuition and activity fees - either HECS, Local or International Fees. The overseas university waives tuition fees for exchange students, but students are responsible for their own travel, accommodation and living expenses.
To help students to study overseas, the University has established International Exchange Scholarships to the value of $1,800. In addition, students with demonstrated financial need may be awarded a Bursary of up to $5,000 to assist them during their period on exchange.
Additional scholarships to assist students on exchange are provided by some Faculties such as Engineering, the Alumni Association and other sponsors. Some overseas universities and governments also provide financial assistance to UNSW students. Students currently receiving Youth Allowance or another scholarship are usually able to receive these benefits while on exchange.
Cross-Institutional Study
Cross-institutional enrolment is where a student enrols in courses at another Australian tertiary institution for credit towards an award at UNSW.
To undertake cross-institutional study at another Australian tertiary institution,
- find out from handbooks or web pages what courses at the host institution may be counted at your home institution.
- provide details of the proposed courses to your program director in CSE and
- ask that they write a letter confirming that the courses at the host institution will count.
- attach the letter to an application for non-award (cross-institutional) enrolment at the host institution.
The description above applies where UNSW is the home institution; similar procedures would occur where UNSW is the host.
Cross-institutional students undertaking courses from an undergraduate program, who are eligible for HECS at their home institution, will incur a HECS liability for their enrolment.
International students normally enrol directly as non-award students at the host and request appropriate advanced standing after the courses are completed.
