Program Overview
further information : what to expect in computer engineering
This 5-year plan enables an Arts degree to be combined with the standard Computer Engineering degree, with a wide range of Arts programs being available (excluding Mathematics and Computing programs).
Anyone who meets the entry requirements for both Computer Engineering and Arts is eligible to enter the combined program directly in first year, or Credit-average students may apply to transfer from the standard Computer Engineering plan later, although with late transfer it might not be possible to complete the program in minimum time. The Bachelor of Engineering degree is awarded after completion of all Computer Engineering courses. Honours are awarded to those who obtain a weighted average mark of at least 65%. The Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded after completion of the whole program.
program objectives: Graduates will be able to:
- undertake the production of high quality computer systems, which will benefit society;
- meet the needs of industry for efficient, reliable computer systems over the period of their professional life;
- make significant contributions to the development and application of computing technology, especially systems that integrate software and hardware.
assumed knowledge:
- For Mathematics (MATH1131): a combined mark of at least 100 in HSC Mathematics and HSC Mathematics Extension 1, or a pass in UNSW General Mathematics (MATH1011);
- For Physics (PHYS1131): HSC Physics, or a pass in UNSW Fundamentals of Physics (PHYS1111).
major studies: Students may specialise in telecommunications, electronics, system and control or advanced computing.
minor studies: Artificial intelligence, computer architecture, digital systems, networking, graphics, operating systems, databases or software engineering.
Industrial Experience: At least 60 days of approved industrial training must be completed before completion of the final semester. Industrial Training should be concurrent with enrolment and is best accumulated in the summer recesses at the end of years 2 and 3, but must be completed by the end of year 4.
professional recognition: Accreditation will be sought from the Institution of Engineers (Australia) and the Australian Computer Society.
career opportunities: Examples include computer systems design, construction and research in the areas of computer networks, commercial systems, digital electronics and image processing. Potential employers include government organisations, educational institutions, large private sector companies and small firms producing specialised systems.
Program Structure
The Computer Engineering/Arts plan is the same as the standard Computer Engineering plan, except that:
- Students also complete a major sequence offered within the BA program (at least 60 UoC), and approved by the Faculty of Arts;
- Students are exempted from General Education requirements (12 UoC);
- Course scheduling is different, because of the need to interleave Arts courses with Computer Engineering courses.
- A Credit average must be maintained (or reversion to the standard Computer Engineering plan will be required).
