Alex Penev

I received a BE (Soft. Eng., Hons I) from CSE UNSW in 2005. I then joined NICTA's NRL research lab to do my PhD. I was part of the Database Group and my supervisor was A/Prof Raymond Wong.

My research interests are mostly IR (search, web2.0, tagging, metadata, online advertising), as well as a bit of data mining and generally anything that's cool and Web-related.

teaching

I've tutored, graded assignments and marked exams for...
  • COMP3421 Computer Graphics. A mix of opengl, java and maths. This course is one of the most-liked by undergrads.
  • COMP2041 Software Construction. The Practice of Programming-inspired swiss army knife course covering perl, shell, c, make and debugging. This was my favourite course when I was undergrad, so I taught it for a couple of years as a postgrad.

misc

I call Australia home. I've lived in Sydney since 1992, but I like traveling. Hobbies include web dev/admin, photos, trading, gaming, soccer and piano
