The differences between 1711 and 1011

COMP1711 involves more work than COMP1011 and yet you get no extra credit for doing this work. As far as the uni is required they are interchangable. We move faster than 1011 so we can spend time on some fun and challenging extension material.

We scale marks from 1711 to make them comparable to 1011 marks. We do this with reference to the assessment which is common to both subjects. We try to ensure that students get no advantage or disavantage from taking 1711 rather than 1011 or visa versa. You should get the same mark regardless of which you take.

You should not decide between the subjects on the basis of mark strategy. You should decide on the basis of interest.

You may change freely between the subjects during the first four weeks of session provided there is room in 1711 and that you can find a suitable tutorial.

Although the material in 1011 and 1711 is related the two subjects do diverge early on so it is best to decide which you wish to take within the first four weeks or you will be giving yourself some catchup work.

Neither subject assumes you have programmed before.

In 1711 we expect you to be keen and prepared to work at mastering the things we introduce in lectures.

If you are doing 1011 and wish to transfer into 1711 you will need to sign and submit the so called "mad form".
