02/12 Provisional marks are available on sturec.
15/11 Teaching consult on Wed 4-6 in K17 204.
12/11 Please return all DVDs to the CSE Help Desk by Monday.
      Then you can borrow them from there. Although the loan
      is for 2 days, please only take it for 1 as it's close
      to exams.
10/11 4-5 revision lecture moved to EELG1 (rex vowels) as
      no one had a laptop and we needed to access the web
      pages.  6-8 will be in seminar room so long as 
      someone has a laptop, otherwise see note on door.
10/11 2nd DVD will be available in the revision lectures.
10/11 Revision lecture today in the level 1 seminar room K17.  
      See the posting underneath for details about what is
      being covered and when.  In particular note that one
      hour is being repeated.
08/11 Reminder that the revision lecture is on this wed from
      4-5, 6-8.  4-5 is for those who can't come along in the
      evening - i'll repeat it from 6-7, so not much point in 
      coming to both. i'll spend most of that hour revising 
      the most requested topics (register your topic request 
      on the forum) and the remainder, if any, plus 7-8 doing 
      a general Q&A. I'm happy to stay back as late as required 
      if we are still going strong at 8.  Also Roland will be 
      running consults on the following wednesday for anyone
      needing last minute help.  He'll post details here on 
      the stop press when we get closer to that time.
27/10 * We'll be distributing dvds in tutorials this week.  
       One per tute, to be passed around the tute members 
       and copied.  
      * We were a bit disappointed to see many of the 
       seminar dvds didn't contain the slides with voice 
       overs, they just had 50 minutes of video footage with
       the slides unreadable.  If your group's seminar slides
       aren't readable on your dvd (most groups!) please post
       them onto the wiki on your support material page asap
       as we want to finalise the seminar group marks before
       stuvac.
      * All students need to send the notes from their 
       presentation to roland asap so we can get 
       them into the wiki before stuvac.  Most have 
       already done so - thanks! email them to 
       rolandw.cs3441@cse (preferably html, pdf/ps ok too)
      * can everyone who has borrowed a DVD, book, camera...
       etc from (me) richard make sure they bring it along to
       the lecture next week.  
      * I believe I have returned all things lent to me by 
       students, if i am wrong and i still have something of
       yours please let me know via the forum so i can bring
       it to the lecture next week.
      * there was considerable interest in the lecture last 
       night in having a revision lecture in stuvac.  I've 
       had two sorts of bad experiences with revision 
       lectures in the past (plus many good ones)
         1. i prepare heaps of stuff but then no one actually
            turns up.
         2. i prepare heaps of stuff but then everyone wants
            to know about *other* stuff.
       to help make this revision lecture a good one (and to
       confirm that you still want it) please post on the 
       forum a brief summary of the topics or points you'd 
       like more help with.  If there is time in the last 
       lecture next week i'll try to cover the most requested
       topic then.
26/10 I wasn't really happy with last week's lecture (i claim 
      my flu impaired my brain!) so i've written up detailed 
      notes of what we covered in a more coherent fashion.  
      Let me know if anything is still unclear or if you have 
      questions about that material.
30/09 I've finished off the sample exam.  It now has sample
      short and long answer questions.  You can also see the
      format of the exam.  I suggest you try it under exam
      conditions.  In particular practise working with the 
      time and space restrictions for the questions.  Bring
      your answers along to the tutorial where we'll be 
      covering the exam (2nd tutorial after session break - 
      while i'm away) as the tutorial won't be much benefit
      unless you have your attempted solutions.
28/09 I've released the sample exam in pdf format below.  It
      contains sample short answer questions.
28/09 Forum has been restructured in response to useful 
      student suggestions.  Let us know if it's more
      helpful now.  Also I've put a quick search feature
      for the notes on the wiki - see below. 
06/09 Because the firewall lab this week has only just come 
      out we have decided to make it optional.  Your final
      lab mark will now be calculated as the sum of your 
      highest six lab marks pro-rated to a mark out of 10.
11/08 The guinea pig places advertised by email have been
      snapped up.  I'm sure the rest of us wish those
      brave enough to volunteer all the best and we hope
      any side effects from the experiment have worn off
      by next lecture.
03/08 We have a few postgrad places free.  If they are not
      taken shortly we'll move the places over for undergrads.
      If you are an undergrad still wishing to take this 
      subject turn up to the lecture tonight (in case you get 
      in) and mail mei cheng to let her know.
03/08 Check your record ("your data" below).  Make sure *all*
      your data is there.  Contact your tutor about any ?s.
26/07 Thanks to those who noticed the typo on the info page.
      The lecture is in Mathews not in Rex Vowels.  Now fixed.
26/07 We are letting 5 more students from the waitlist in.
      Then we will be full to the gills.  We'll mail you
      if you are waiting and are one of the five lucky ones.
      keep a close eye on your mail since it will be a pain
      to miss the first week. 
20/07 Forum is pretty much done now so it's safe to join and
      start using.  Subject handout and teaching schedule
      (see links below) are finished bar minor edits too.
09/07 We are full - see the "we are full" link below to join
      the waiting list.  Web site being updated over the next
      two weeks so check back from time to time.  Everything
      here at the moment is still draft only.  Forum is being
      rebuilt.
26/02 The preliminary 2004s2 web site is now active.  Please
      look around to see what we'll be doing in Security and
      Cryptography this year.  You'll notice that it has 
      an increased focus on security and hackers and crackers.
      It should be fun.  Prospective students please feel
      free to post on the forum in advance.  The subject is
      still being finalised so still you have a chance to have 
      a say in what happens.
      I'll continute to update the site over session 1 to give
      an indication of how the subject planning is evolving. 
14/02 Starting to tidy up the site - stay tuned for more info
      on content and subject structure.
01/02 The class filled up last week.  Quota has now been increased
      by another 20 places. mail cs3441@cse.unsw.edu.au if it fills up
      again and we'll see what we can do.  However we are planning to
      keep combined 3441/9441 enrollments under 100 this year so be
      quick.
27/12 This site is currently under construction for 2004 session 2
      Lectures are 5-8 Tuesday in Matthews B. LIC for 2004 is Richard
      Buckland. Lectures will probably be by Richard, Ron, and selected
      guest speakers.

Prereqs for the subject have been relaxed in 2004. Networks and
      Algorithms are no longer required subjects, however Data
      Organisation IS required.  You will need to know the ISO/OSI
      network model, however we will probably cover this as background
      material in the first week for those who have not done
      networking yet.

Keep your eyes on this page for details of any additional
      (optional) background lectures which we might run in week 1.
      Updated timestable and prereq information has not yet made it to
      the official handbook and timetable pages online - wherever
      there is a conflict the information on the subject homepage (ie
      here) is more up-to-date.

This should be a fun subject with lots of topical and exciting
      topics covered.

More coming soon as I gradually work out what we will be doing
      and set up this site for 2004.  You should check back here
      periodically.
