31/11 I've submitted *provisional* marks. Note these can change at any time before next tuesday afternoon but if you want to peek at them you can check it out - the field is called "Submitted" i'll post here on tuesday when the marks are finalised. 21/11 Hi guys, I'm back at uni today. Sorry about being out of action for so long. I've booked the level 1 meeting room k17 for this afternoon and this evening. I'll give a revision lecture at 5:15 for anyone who is interested and be available to answer questions generally from about 2:30 till then (starting when my next meeting finishes). The revision lecture will last one hour. I'll then stay back as long as needed or my strength holds out (cough cough splutter) to answer any questions or give any help i can. regards richard 21/11 Exam Location The final exam will be held in Rex Vowel Theatre (EELG1) on Thursday 24/11 8:45 AM to 12 PM 13/11 NO LECTURE TOMORROW (Monday) Richard is ill. Please pass the word around. He'll try to arrange another revision day if he is well before the exam. Maybe this Friday or maybe next Monday. Details here as they are worked out. He is terribly sorry to have inconvenienced anyone who made special plans for tomorrow. 10/11 I'll be available for review and exam consultations next monday (14 november) from lunch till late (8pm if needed) except for a meeting I have at 3pm. Please post on the forum any questions or specific topics you would like me to review. I will give a revision lecture at 1-2pm and another at 5-6 (or 6-7 if people prefer?). You need to (on the forum) request topics to be covered in each lecture and indicate if you will be coming so I can plan them. I will only give the lectures if people are coming (ofcourse). The lectures are in the K17 level 1 meeting room. Don't forget the penalty for not being there when your name is called. 27/09 Cracking challenge released. For budding codebreakers. It is just for the challenge - if you feel like learning/honing/demonstarating crypoanalytic skills then give it a try. I'll keep it online for a while. You may do it in groups or individually. Please no spoilers revealed publically. Requires cunning rather than too much fancy maths - but you will need to use your maths too. I've tried to make it similar to how code breaking actually works in the field. Many thanks to the super smart and ever cheerful David Greenaway for all his help is setting it up and doing the brainy bits. 19/09 I've got a CRACKING challenge for you to whet your cryptanalysis and tcp/ip skills on in the break. Not worth any marks at all - but i'll be impressed if you get into it or even crack it entirely. I'll post it later on in the week - keep your eyes here on the stop-press. 19/09 Click on the "new posts" button in ther forum to see any new posts since your last visit (otherwise you have to spend ages visiting each forum and checking dates. VOTE for each seminar and each lab on the forum. That helps determine the grade they are awarded. Be quick before they all go. I can't praise the revue too highly, come along for an amazing night (if you manage to get tickets). 22/08 mac lab is being upgraded this Friday 29/08. The fri12 lab will be held in pipe this week. 19/08 We are about to close the forum to new registrations. Make sure you register ASAP if you have not yet done so. Remember to use your wikiname. 18/08 Tutes and labs are up. 11/08 The lab exercises and tute discussion topics are now up for next week. 10/08 You can view your submitted week3 lab report via a link on the week 3 lab page. If you didn't submit you can still attend your lab and show the marker what you did to get their comments and suggestions - but you won't get any marks. Note: If you've missed submitting your first report you have used up your *spare* lab but you can still get full marks - you only need 22 marks to get full marks for the labs (ie 11 weeks worth). Do make sure you read the course info page carefully. From some of the posts i am seeing it seems quite a few people have not read it yet (it was required reading in week 1...) 5/08 Week 3 tutorial exercises are now up. 4/08 I've posted a list of suggestions of topics you could include in your seminar - see the admin section of this week's notes. 30/07 Fixed - the cgi setting got broken when apache was upgraded. The CSG kindly tracked down and correct the problem with speed. You can now see the discussion topic for the week 2 tutorial. Postgrads AND undergrads need to research and prepare an answer. Click on the week 2 tutorial link in the schedule. 30/07 The wiki seems to be having problems (at least for me) we are looking into it. if it isn't solved by this evening i'll put the w2 tute exercises up in a temp static web page for you. cheers richard 26/07 To the postgrads who asked on monday for more places - we've added 8 more places which should be available for online enrolments now. 18/07 Due to popular demand we have managed to increase the number of postgraduate places available (we had some spare capacity in two labs). 01/03 We are now 91% full. [If there is space in the class and demand to do so] we'll drop the prereqs for 3441 and 9441 to 12uoc at 75 or greater for next week, 6uoc in week 3 and then [maybe even] 0uoc in week 4 of session. 21/02 Most of the site is now up for 2005. Still to publish are the 2004 postmortem, the readings and resources links, sample seminar stuff and the first tute and labs. I'll work on this slowly as session 1 progresses so it's worth checking back here from time to time. For the next few months i'll be spending most of my time on my session one subject 1711. If you are keen to enrol in 3441 but missed out because of the network and the WAM prereqs then keep a close eye on the site in the early days of session 1 as we'll announce here when we've relaxed the prereqs in NSS. 14/02 The Subject Information Page (see "introduction" link below) is in beta release. Read it to find out how the subject will be run in 2005. 14/02 We are currently 80% full so the subject is filling up faster than I had expected. We'll relax the entry criteria if there are still vacancies left when session one starts. 03/01 This site is currently under construction for 2005 session 2. This should be a fun subject with lots of topical and exciting topics covered. Last year it was very successful (from my point of view) and very popular (from the students' point of view). We have an enrollment quota because of the seminars and lab work. Last year we filled up quite quickly and I expect the same might happen in 2005. Lectures are 5-8 Monday evening followed immediately by a one hour seminar 8-9. The lecturer in charge is Richard Buckland, who has just had a baby and will only be working part time. So we'll prob have some guest speakers. And I won't be operating at hi-IQ or with high levels of sleep so it will probably be even below my normal level of organisation. Prereqs for the subject in 2005: You need to have done data organisation and descrete maths (or equivalent) AND you either need to: have a credit or higher in COMP3331 Networks OR have done well in several subjects and be prepared to teach yourself a bit of TCP/IP in your own time. "have done well in several computing subjects" initially means have at least 18uoc of subjects with a mark of 75 or higher. We'll relax this second requirement a bit around the start of first session if we have any vacancies left. Preparation: I'll give an (optional) revision lecture lecture in week 1 or 2 on networking and TCP/IP to let you know what you need to revise/learn. It's not too hard. Keep your eyes on this page for details of any other (optional) background lectures which we might run in the first few weeks. The extended stream of the networking subject (COMP3331) will be covering a bit of network security in session 1 2005. The lecturer (salilk) is happy for prospective COMP3441 students to attend that lecture. I'll try to make it too. More details in this stopPress as I find them. The other preparation you should try to do is to checkout the interesting "folklore" readings which will shortly be posted on the subject readings page. More coming in jan and feb as I gradually work out what we will be doing this year and set up this site for 2005. I'll add the subject postmortem to the 2004 site when i get the feedback forms back (they are STILL not back from the data processing centre) - and i'll update the 2005 info page with the altered subject design to reflect any changes which arise from the postmortem. 30/12 My new daughter, Dorothy, was born on this day. She is wonderful.
