Assigmment FAQ 2.2

What am I supposed to do for 2.2?

In 2.2 you are just trying to get an impression of your target audience and based on interviews start to refine your requirements. This is aimed for you to rethink your first concept (presented in 2.1) having spoken to some people who are not part of your design team.

You are to take the interview questions that have been checked by your tutor and conduct a face-to-face interview with a friend or family member or somebody that you know who fits the profile of your target audience. The nice thing about the museum exhibit is that the audience could be anybody but this also means that your user won't have specific needs like say an accountant might have for an accounting application.

As discussed in the first lecture, privacy of the interviewees is mandatory. You must not disclose interviewees real names in your submission, use anonymous names or refer to them by number, say participant #1, even if they are your friends or family. Do not include the consent forms in the assignment submission. We must not be able to identify any individual from your interview summary.

Remember to inform your participant about the purpose of the interview and get them to read and sign the consent form. If they do not wish to particpate then you will have to abide by their wishes and find somebody else.

2-3 interviewees per group should be sufficient for the first stage of data gathering. You can choose to interview each person as a group or subdivide the tasks amongst your group members. The important aspect of the interview really comes in interpreting the information in your design group. We are not interested in a word by word account of what was said but a summary of the important aspects of the interview.

After you have conducted your interview you should have a better understanding about your audience understands of the topic area you have chosen, what they may or may not be interested in, how they might conduct a visit to a museum and other details about the context of their visit.

Once you have conducted the interviews your design group should sit and review the findings to identify the trends in the data and begin to formulate a better understanding of the users needs and understanding of your interactive exhibit and . You could use affinity diagramming in your discussions to categorise the information.

Following the group discussion you should come up with 2 scenarios that create a situation that is representative of the data that you have uncovered through your user interviews. You may have interviewed a mother with two children and a student studying arts so come up with scenarios that are based on the mother and the student. Don't just write scenarios purely based on those interviewees, develop broader characters that are influenced by those people. Remember to use a ficticious name in your scenarios so that you start to build an imaginary user that has some real characteristics of a potential user. Again do not use real names in scenarios.

Go back and rethink your original proposal reflecting on what you have just learned from interviewing people and developing the scenarios. What are the requirements of the system? Consider this in terms of information you are presenting to the user and the style of interaction that you are going to use. Don't worry about the visualisation part for this part of the assignment that comes in 2.3 when you start sketching.
