Real-time OS Issues

  • Real-time processes characterised by a deadline.
  • OS must be able to guarantee completion by deadline.
  • Requires:
    • predictable execution,
    • predictable and limited system overheads,
    • preemtability of long system calls,
      • kernel locking, reentrancy...
      • similar requirements as for SMP
    • analysis of schedulability prior to process admission,
    • careful scheduling.
