Virtual Network Computing (VNC)
sms and Xmark are X-windows applications. If you have broadband at home
you can use VNC to run these applications from home. Read more about VNC at
http://www.realvnc.com/what.html
Follow the steps below to get started:
- Install a VNC viewer on your home computer.
- Log into your cse account from your home computer.
- Run the VNC server after logging into your cse account.
/usr/bin/X11/vncserver
or /usr/bin/X11/vncserver -geometry 1200x700
When you run this for the first time, you will be prompted for a password.
A directory ~/.vnc will be created containing passwd and xstartup files.
- The output from the vncserver command will tell you which server and display to connect.
New 'X' desktop is wagner:53
Starting applications specified in /etc/X11/Xsession
Log file is /import/kamen/1/meicheng/.vnc/wagner:53.log
- Run the VNC viewer on your home computer, enter the remote server hostname and display number.
e.g. wagner:53
server or host is wagner.cse.unsw.edu.au and display is 53
- Change the VNC viewer window size to suit your laptop or desktop using -geometry option of the vncserver command.
With Chicken of the VNC, you have to also resize the viewer window until the scrollbars disappear.
- Change the xstartup file to use your window manager and settings (optional).
- Logging off will not kill your vnc session. Type the following command
to kill your session:
vncserver -kill :displaynumber
or add the command to the end of your ~/.vnc/xstartup
- To turn on middle button emulation on the Mac/Chicken of the VNC:
Connection->Connection Profiles->Emulation->Center Mouse Button->Modifier Click
