DISK QUOTA EXCEEDED

This common problem occurs due to the utilisation of all disk quota allocated to your particular account. A direct consequence of this is the inability to successfully log into a CSE terminal.

To resolve this problem follow the steps listed below on any of:

  • the booking terminals located throughout the CSE laboratories (there are two located outside the Help Desk, ME undercroft, two in Elec Eng Building labs).

  • terminals in CSE laboratories but you must choose Failsafe Terminal Session on the login screen.

  1. Log into the booking/failsafe terminal using your CSE username and password:

    Book login: <your CSE usename>

Password: <your CSE password>

  1. At the BOOK> prompt type:

shell

  1. At the prompt type:

disk_guess| more

This gives you a list of the biggest files and directories in your account. The vast majority of over quota problems can be solved by the removal of any such files or directories. To remove files, use the `rm’ command:

rm filename

To remove a directory and all its contents, use the `rm –rf’ command:

rm -rf directoryname

Upon removal of all such large files or directories, you should confirm that your account is once

again below disk quota:

rquota

  1. You may be able to solved your over quota problem by compressing your files, directories using tar and gzip. Please refer to the basic unix & linux commands brochure for further instructions.

  1. Once you are satisfied that you are below disk quota (as indicated by the unit under blocks) type:

exit to leave the xterm console (and logout the Failsafe Terminal) and

exit again to leave the BOOK> prompt.

  1. You should now be able to successfully log into an undergraduate CSE machine. If you experience further problems please come to the Help Desk, Mechanical Engineering Undercroft, G03 or email helpdesk@cse.unsw.edu.au, phone (02) 9385 5438, http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~helpdesk, http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/faq/quota.html
