Glasgow

[Back]

Glasgow is essentially a Victorian-era city (19th century), despite having been here for much longer (since the 12th century). At one time it was the "second city of the Empire" (second only to London), and one of the world's major industrial/trade centres. Most of the buildings in the photos date from this period of prosperity. The city centre has good shopping, and some delightful buildings.

Glasgow went into decline in the first half of the 20th century, with the body blow being the emergence of Japan and Korea as ship-building powers. This pretty much wiped out Glasgow's largest industry, the Clyde shipyards. The Clyde River still flows through the centre of Glasgow but is now a relatively quiet backwater (cf. Melbourne's Yarra river).

In the late 20th century, it began to reinvent itself as a financial hub and innovation/arts/fashion centre (think Franz Ferdinand et al). The current city slogan is "Glasgow: Scotland with Style". In the last few years, and with the coming of the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the Clyde river-bank has undergone substantial regeneration, including the building of the city's major concert hall in a structure that's reminiscent of the Sydney Opera house, but which the locals have christened "The Armadillo".

Glasgow's coat-of-arms (tree/fish/bird/bell ... it's a long story, involving St. Mungo)

Statue in George Square (probably English, given seagull's reaction)

Merchant City (trendy part of CBD)

Concert Hall, with statue of first chair of Scottish Parliament

Yes, there is a Korean restaurant in Glasgow (but only one)

Armadillo again (hmmm ... looks vaguely familiar)
