The Lake District, in north-west England, is a series of lakes dotted amongst the Cumbrian Mountains. Strangely (useful for pub trivia quizzes), only one of them is is actually called "lake"; the rest are called other names like "mere" and "water". The main tourist town is Windermere (now joined to Bowness), distinguished by having many of its houses built with layered slate walls (see pics below).
