Jian Zhang PhD, SMIEEE
General Chair, IEEE International Conference in Multimedia & Expo (ICME) 2012, Melbourne, Australia
Since August 2011, A/Prof Zhang has joined Advanced Analytics Institute (AAI), Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) at University of Technology (UTS), Sydney. http://uts.edu.au/~jzhang. He still hold the Adjunct Associate Professor position in School of Computer Science and Engineering University of New South Wales (UNSW)
Jian Zhang was a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales. Dr Zhang earned his Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering from East Normal University, China in 1982; a Masters of Science in Computer Science from Flinders University, South Australia in 1994; and a PhD from School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, UNSW@ADFA, Australian Defence Force Academy, at the University of New South Wales in 1999.
From January 2004 – July 2011, Dr Zhang was a Principal Researcher with National ICT Australia (NICTA), where he is a research leader of Multimedia and Video Communications Research at NICTA Sydney Lab in UNSW Kensington campus. He leads three NICTA research projects in the areas of computer vision, multimedia content analysis and management, and multimedia content indexing and query. His research interests include multimedia content management; video understanding; and video coding and communication. Multimedia content management provides advanced algorithms to manage, index search, and retrieve rich multimedia content. Video understanding is concerned with the automatic or semi-automatic extraction of semantic information from video sequences. Video coding and communication provides an efficient method for video compression and robust transmission. Apart from more than 90 paper publications and book chapters from his research output, he was co-author of more than ten patents filed in US, UK, Japan and Australia including five issued US patents.
In 1997, Dr. Zhang joined the Visual Information Processing Lab, Motorola Labs in Sydney as a senior research engineer and later became a principal research engineer and foundation manager of Visual Communications Research Team, Motorola Labs in Sydney, Australia. While at Motorola labs, he worked on a range of research projects including image processing, video coding and communication, image segmentation and multimedia content adaptation.
Dr. Zhang is an IEEE Senior Member. He is the member of Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committee in Signal Processing Society, member of Circuits and Systems Society. Dr. Zhang was Technical Program Chair, 2008 IEEE Multimedia Signal Processing Workshop; Associated Editor, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (T-CSVT) and Associated Editor, EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing. Dr Zhang was Guest Editor of T-CSVT for Video Technology for Special Issue (March 2007) of the Convergence of Knowledge Engineering Semantics and Signal Processing in Audiovisual Information Retrieval.
As a General Co-Chair, Prof. Jian Zhang will host the International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME 2012) in Melbourne Australia 2012
