The Linux kernel homepage is here . Linux is a free kernel, intended to be used alongside other sofware to provide a free operating system.
An exemple of such free (in the sense of libre) OS is the Debian GNU/Linux operating system.

Now some useful programs :

MPlayer : The Ultimate Media player. Play anything from DVD to ogm, matroska, realplayer... and has a great encoder too :).
The GNOME Desktop Environment : A great DE for Unix users. Latest news on GNOME can be found here.
The Galeon Web Browser : A web browser that works well together with GNOME
gDesklets : Some eye-candy for your GNOME Desktop.
Lilypond : A set of tools to typeset music.
