Appalachian School of Law Shootings http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~lambert/guns/appalachian News Stories in the week after the Appalachian School of Law Shootings en Daily Record http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~lambert/guns/appalachian/2002/01/17#188 <p><span class="normal">A LAW student shot dead three people, including the dean of his school, after seeing his exam results.</span></p> <p><span class="normal">A lecturer and a student were also killed and three other students were left fighting for their lives. </span><span class="tackle">The bloodbath only ended when brave students overpowered the gunman, who has not been named.</span><span class="normal"></span></p> <p><span class="normal">Early reports said the killer was a third-year foreign exchange student who was about to be thrown out of the school due to poor grades.</span></p> <p><span class="normal">He ran amok with .380 semi-automatic pistol on the campus of the Appalachian Law School in the sleepy US town of Grundy, Virginia, after seeing his exam results posted on a notice board.</span></p> <p><span class="normal">The first medic on the scene said the dean, Anthony Sutin, had been &#8220;executed&#8221; and the lecturer, Tom Blackwell, had been shot in the back as he lay on the ground.</span></p> <p><span class="normal">Dr Jack Briggs said: &#8220;They were shot at point-blank range. The dean was shot twice in the head. It appears he was executed.&#8221;</span></p> <p><span class="normal">The doctor said the gunman had flunked out of the school last year but had been given one last chance to make the grade. However, he was still failing.</span></p> <p><span class="normal">The doctor added: &#8220;The person who did the shooting was a patient of mine. I saw him about six months ago. He was complaining of stress.&#8221;</span></p> <p><span class="normal">&#8220;He was a timebomb waiting to go off.&#8221;</span></p> <p><span class="normal">The college has around 170 students and was set up in 1997 to help the run -down coal mining area&#8217;s economy.</span></p> <p><span class="normal"></span></p>
