Prasant Misra is a PhD student in the School of Computer Science and
Engineering (CSE) at the
University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney Australia, and a (casual) Research Assistant in the Networks Research group in this school.
His research interests have been in the areas of network embedded systems,
wireless sensor networks, wireless networks with applications related to
cyber-physical systems, sparse approximation, compressive sensing, and artificial
neural network based machine learning for system identification.
Specifically, he is interested in (application specific) signal design and
analysis, information processing techniques, and implementation of sensornet
systems/testbeds that involves their design, prototyping and deployment.
His doctoral thesis focusses on acoustical localization techniques in embedded wireless sensor networked devices with applications in mining, rescue and robotics. He is being advised by Prof. Sanjay Jha (Professor and Head of Group: Networks Research) and Mr. Diet Ostry (Senior Research Scientist, Wireless and Networking Technologies Laboratory, CSIRO ICT Centre, Sydney - and also, the co-inventor of WiFi). He has also actively collaborated on various research projects (relating to his thesis) with Dr. Wen Hu, Dr. Navinda Kottege and Dr. Branislav Kusy of the Sensor Networks Group, Autonomous Systems Laboratory, CSIRO ICT Centre, Brisbane. His current research is funded by the Australian Leadership Award Scholarship(ALAS) sponsored by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Government of Australia, and is also supported by the UNSW/CSIRO Research Scholarship. He has been a visiting researcher in the Networked Systems Research Program at the National Information and Communications Technology (NICTA) ATP Sydney, Australia; and the School of Technology and Computer Science at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai, India. He has also spend considerable time as a summer thesis student in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela and the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) Rourkela. Prior to this (2006-08), he was a Senior Software Engineer in Keane Inc, Bangalore, India where he was a software developer in the project delivery department of the Health-care vertical. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (BE'06 First-class with Honors) degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Sambalpur University (SU) in India (Degree awarded by: Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) Rourkela). His wonderful schooling days were completed (ICSE'99 and ISCE'01) from St.Patrick’s Higher Secondary (SPS) School, Asansol. Presently, he is the Editor of CIRCUIT (the official IEEE NSW section newsletter) and the Vice-chair of the GOLD Affinity group of the IEEE NSW Section. He served as the Chair of the IEEE UNSW Student Branch from 2010 to 2011. He is also a member of the ACM and IEEE professional societies. |
