Of course, you don't just track and install patches to keep hackers out. Patches often make software and OS'es more reliable and sometimes add functionality.

Unfortunately sometimes they create new bugs or administrative nightmares.

  1. Don't install beta versions of software unless you have to.

  2. Don't install version 1.0 of anything.

  3. Wait some weeks/months after a major software release to see if there are any patches issued.
