Getting Older

Everybody has their opinion and some people are wrong. One of the things I enjoy about my films is that children really love them. They are open-minded. As we get older we seem to close in. We limit the size of the world we limit everything about it. We have to break that shell open sometimes and (The Brothers Grimm) is just a desperate attempt to do so.

Yeah, though it gets harder as you get older because it's easier to get bored. Things are less surprising. But, being visually excitable, I can sit and look at something and be amazed at, like, a wood carving over here or the shade on this lamp. Taking in the world around me and enjoying it on a visual level gets me through a lot of the boring moments of life.

The Heart Sutra is in a small class of sūtras not attributed to the Buddha

Body is nothing more than emptiness,
emptiness is nothing more than body.
The body is exactly empty,
and emptiness is exactly body.

The Heart Sutra, it is generally thought, is likely to have been composed in the 1st century CE in Kushan Empire territory, by a Sarvastivadin or ex-Sarvastivadin monk

Is this true?

Charles Lineweaver in 2001

There's nothing special about intelligence - we just think it's the pinnacle of evolution because we have it - and therefore assume it exists throughout the universe. But the biologists say it's a one-off, the chance of fluking intelligence on other planets is about as likely as fluking elephants.

You can imagine an elephant. I have a very long nose and it's such a great thing. I can pick up peanuts. I can pull down trees. I can do all kinds of things. Surely this is something that's so useful you'd expect it to evolve everywhere, any species should have evolved towards something like me and yet I think as a non-elephant you can see that that's probably a vain position, a little bit egotistical.

Give your seat up for a monk

Do show great respect to monks and offer your seat on a boat or bus to a monk. As a general rule women should avoid all physical and eye contact with a monk. Everyone is expected to show respect to monks.

It is always appreciated if you give up your seat for a monk and the river express boats in Bangkok even have special Monk only areas.
