Generalist Degree

The BSc in Computer Science, while it has a mid-range minimum UAI for entry, is taken by some of our brightest students because of the flexibility it offers. This program specifies a minimum content of computing and mathematics courses; the rest of the content is elective - you choose your courses from available science courses. Popular choice patterns include taking as many computing courses as possible (from the School of Computer Science and Engineering or the School of Information Systems, Technology and Management, or both), and studying a second major in another science discipline (physics, mathematics, or psychology, for example). The two School links above point to each School's course offerings, not the Schools' home pages.

While the BSc Computer Science is normally completed in 3 years, the majority of gifted and talented students would also complete the fourth (honours) year of this course, which involves extra coursework subjects and a thesis/project equivalent to 3 coursework subjects, to graduate with BSc(Hons) Computer Science. Entry to the honours year is dependent on achieving an average of 65% in at least 5 level-3-or-above Computing courses (with certain exceptions in the case of students completing a double major).

The details of the 4th year honours program are towards the end of the BSc in Computer Science web page, under the heading "Year 4 Honours (Optional)".
