Class of Honours The class-of-honours system is not a facility for gifted and talented students but rather a recognition of achievement, and it works as follows. On completion of the BE or of a BSc(Hons), a weighted average mark is calculated, with special emphasis (under current rules) on the later years, especially the final year and the thesis undertaken in the final year. The detailed criteria differ between BE and BSc(Hons).
Those with the highest level of achievement are awarded their degree with First Class Honours. Lesser but still meritorious achievement is recognised by the award of Second Class Honours Division 1 or Division 2.
