I've asked bill to put teaching staff for the COMP1 and COMP2 "software" subjects on the TC agenda. The subjects I'm talking about (with number of times offered per year) are: 1001 (2), 1011 (2), 1021 (3), 1091(1), 1711 (1), 1721 (1), 2011(2), 2041(1) These subjects constitute ~40% of our teaching. I feel we have to be give these subjects a higher priority. Ken has compared our organization of first year teaching to a badly run church fete and there is more than a little truth in this. For example, we don't have anyone allocated to 1011 next session (01s1). This is unfortunate as it is much better if someone teaching 1011 is introduced to 1011 a previous session, e.g. as tutor and guest lecturer. Part of the problem is that its not obvious who can teach 1011 in 01s1. 1021 is in a similar position - we have to deliver it three times next year but don't have anyone allocated yet. Note, there are suggestions we should deliver some of the above subjects more often and also suggestions of new COMP1 or COMP2 subjects. My view is that we should: a) Allocate staff to these subjects first not last b) if we are hiring new staff - look for people who can deliver these subjects well. [ I'm not critizing anyone - there are good reasons why we are in this situation - but we have to fix it. ] Andrew
