cse    CSE Elite Student Programme

CSE runs a programme for elite students enrolled in the Computer Science program which allows them some scope to vary their program to cover more challenging content or become involved in School research projects.

Entry to the Programme

Students must apply to enter the programme.

Beginning students can enter the programme by achieving a UAI of 98 or higher for HSC or by placing in an international competition such as the International Olympiad in Informatics.

Current students can enter the programme by maintaining a WAM of 90 or greater over their degree so far.

Applications are via email to the Elite Student Programme Coordinator, Aleks Ignjatovic (a.ignjatovic@unsw.edu.au).

Programme Guidelines

Students in this programme may apply to vary their program to a limited extent by substituting core or non-core courses for courses which emphasise technical depth or research.

Applications will be considered, provided:

When substituting a core course, students must be able to demonstrate that they already have the knowledge/skills acquired in that course.

In all cases, the CSE Program Authority reserves the right to reject any application it deems unsuitable or inappropriate.

Note: substitutions may impact on the weighted average calculation used to determine the level of honours on completion of some programs. See weighted average principles governing the relevant award for full details on the impact of varying program requirements.

Implementation

CSE will maintain a register of all students in the Programme.

At the start of each calendar year, the Programme Coordinator will review the list of students currently in the program and any students that have become eligible by virtue of stellar performance in preceding terms.

Students who have continued to perform well (WAM ≥ 90) will be permitted to remain in the program. Those who have not maintained the standard will be removed from the program. Any prior substitutions will be honoured provided that the student completed the substituted course successfully.

Elite students should discuss any planned variations to their program with the Programme Coordinator. They will be asked to describe how their substitution will emphasise one of the areas outlined in the policy.

Any variations requiring pre-requisite waiver or core course substition, if approved by the Programme Coordinator, will be forwarded to the Nucleus to complete the enrolment.
