Proposal to Introduce a New Program Proposed Name of the Program: Master of Engineering Science in Mobile Systems Program Authority: School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications and School of Computer Science and Engineering Reason for the Proposal: Mobile telecommunications and the Internet have seen a phenomenal growth in recent years. This growth is set to continue with the integration of these two technologies to provide mobile Internet services, where users will have access to different types of information anywhere at any time. This new program is designed to cater for the above market and to offer students skills in mobile communications, mobile networks and mobile computing. It will also provide students with an in-depth knowledge of personal communications. Admission Requirements (any of the following): B.E. in Electrical Engineering B.E. in Telecommunications B.E. in Computer Engineering B.E. in Software Engineering B.Sc. in Computer Science (4 year Honours degree) Program Attendance Mode/Type: Internal or Short Course Mode Estimated Enrolment: 2000: 50 2001: 70 2002: 100 Program Design The new program consists of four core courses and four elective streams. All courses (core and elective) for the new program are taken from existing postgraduate programs offered by both the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications and the School of Computer Science and Engineering. Students are required to undertake eight courses, including all core courses (below) that they have not completed in their undergraduate studies. The remaining courses are then chosen from the elective streams. Students are encouraged to take at least one course from each elective stream. Students who have achieved an average mark greater than 75% in their first four courses will be eligible to undertake a thesis, equivalent to three courses. Core Courses COMP9331 Computer Networks and Applications COMP9201 Operating Systems ELEC9342 Digital Signal Processing and Applications ELEC9403 Real Time Computing and Control Normally, students with any of the above undergraduate degrees would already have satisfied two of the following four core courses. For example, a B.E. in Electrical Eng. would normally exempt students from the last two courses, while a B.E. in Computer Eng. would normally exempt students from the first two courses. Elective Streams Mobile Computing COMP9243 Distributed Systems COMP9315 Database Systems Implementation COMP9511 Human Computer Interaction COMP4111* Distributed Object Systems and Technology Mobile Networks TELE9301 Switching System Design TELE9303 Network Management TELE9302 Computer Networks TELE9337 Advanced Networking TELE4333* Wireless Data Communication Systems COMP9332 Network Routing and Switching COMP9333 Advanced Computer Networks COMP9791 Modern Navigation and Positioning Techniques Mobile Communications TELE9301 Switching System Design TELE9344 Cellular Mobile Communications TELE4353* Mobile and Satellite Communications TELE4323* Digital Modulation and Coding COMP9332 Network Routing and Switching Generic Electives COMP9008 Software Engineering COMP9002 XML and Databases COMP9444 Neural Networks ELEC9345 Neural Networks and Applications ELEC9344 Speech and Audio Processing ELEC9370 Digital Image Processing * Students who have already completed these courses as part of their undergraduate program will be required to choose alternative courses within their elective streams.
