Minutes of Teaching Management Committee Meeting 20 March 2006

Attendance: billw (chair), compton, chu, sridevan, bgaeta, emartin, kenr, lambert

  1. Paul Compton briefed the meeting on the intended role of Teaching Management Committee
As well as having a role in issues like confirming course offerings and similar compliance matters, the TMC will oversee teaching quality, for example by reviewing courses in the wake of the CATEI/Andrew Taylor surveys. Cluster coordinators will report to the TMC, as will Ken Robinson in his role in supporting those who have "red" survey reports.

  2. HESA Compliance - confirming 06s2 course offerings for BINF, COMP, SENG and ENGG1811, ENGG1000
The meeting went through the list, provided by Cassandra Nock, of all COMP, BINF, and SENG courses on the books, and determined which ones would be offered, or tentatively offered, in 06s2. Cassandra will update NSS class schedules, and publish the relevant course pages in the on-line handbook, accordingly.

  3. Heads up - time to get ready for IEAust accreditation visit
TMC members are alerted to the imminent beginning of the accreditation process. Bill Wilson outlined the requirements on the School in the 2001 accreditation round, and said that the details of the IEAust process were not yet available.

  4. Any other business
    Examination Setting Process
The TMC discussed the exam setting process in the light of the recent statistics from exams section indicating that CSE was the worst School in the Faculty at the 05s2 exams. It was concluded that course coordinators should be reminded of the School's long-standing requirement for solutions to be submitted with the exam paper, and that this requirement should be strengthened by asking course coordinators to provided the solutions to the nominated assessor for the course's examination paper.

Consideration is also being given to adopting a system similar to the system used at the University of Queensland, where each School has a Chief Examiner, who sees all exam papers before they are submitted to Exams Section (and even if the examination is internal). Most likely cluster coordinators would act as chief examiners for their clusters.
