this report:
Report by Mike Carter, Neil Macumber and Peter Crabtree on their visit to
the NW Torres Strait (Queensland) islands of Saibai, Dauan and Boigu, August
1998.
9 Streak-headed Mannikins on 19/8 on Saibai (not previously recorded in
Aust. but apparently present in adjacent Trans-Fly in PNG (Coates) - subject
to acceptance by BARC.
Mangrove Grey Fantail on Saibai and Wood Sandpiper on Boigu may be new birds
for Torres Strait.
Saibai: 73 species seen in 3 days, 14 of which not previously listed.
Dauan: 33 species seen in 3 days, 17 of which not previously listed.
Boigu: 66 species seen in 2 days, 12 of which not previously listed.
Other birds of particular interest:
definite Australian Hobbies on all 3 islands and possible Oriental Hobby on
Dauan;
Welcome, Barn and Red-rumped Swallow and possible Pacific Swallow on Boigu
on 19/8;
4 Singing Starlings on Boigu;
2 Rose-crowned Fruit-doves on Dauan; 1 on Saibai;
4+ Olive-backed Orioles on Saibai and 8+ on Dauan;
Mangrove Golden Whistler (9+) and Pale White-eyes on Dauan;
Mangrove Gerygone on Saibai and Dauan;
Chestnut-breasted Mannikins on Boigu;
Swamp Harriers on Boigu and Dauan;
29+ Channel-billed Cuckoos on Dauan;
1 Australasian Grebe on Saibai.
