Are shorebirds a family or an order?  Or a suborder?  According to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charadriformes the Plains-wanderer is in a
family by itself, in suborder Thinocori, which it describes as "aberrant
charadriforms".

I don't have the book with me, but if their taxonomy is anything like
the list on that web page, then they've selected several suborders and
excluded others. Apologies to those who prefer more authoritative
sources than Wikipedia.
